Mac OSX
A collection of some software for Mac OSX. In general, Versiontracker and MacUpdate have everything listed, but sometimes it takes a while to find what you need. Here is what we use.
Browsers
- Safari
- Fast and easy to use.
- Firefox
- Safer than IE. Which doesn't exist on the Mac anyway.
- Camino
- Looks better on the Mac than Firefox.
- Sunrise Browser
- A very lightweight (600k) but full-featured browser with some useful features for developers.
- Opera
- Useful when pathetic sites block your "outdated" browser. Set to self-identify as IE.
FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
- Cyberduck
- Solid and under constant development.
Text editors
- TextMate
- Just seems to work, feel and look better to us.
- Text Wrangler
- Can cope with huge files in a flash.
- SubEthaEdit
- For collaborative editing, the only choice (that we know of).
Archiving
- The Unarchiver
- Does what it says on the label.
- DropCompress
- Does what it says on the label.
Instant messaging
- Adium
- Supports everything. No video though.
- Skype
- Video.
Office suites
- OpenOffice
- Now looking and feeling more and more like an OSX native application.
- iWork
- Apple. Good for pamphlets and the like.
- Mellel
- The best for writing structured documents. Essential for academics.
Image editing
- Preview
- Now does a surprising amount of stuff.
- GIMP
- Now looking and feeling more and more like an OSX native application.
- Resize!
- Resizes folders of images easily.
- Inkscape
- Vector graphics.
- Acorn
- Simple graphics editor.
